The new tax went into effect this month, increasing to $2.75 of tax per pack of cigarettes, the highest in the nation. The state’s Smokers Quitline quadrupled to 10,000 calls received the week of June 2. Across most of the state, the average cost per pack is between $6 and $8. New York City has added its own tobacco tax pushing the price up to as much as $10 per pack.
Although my practice is dedicated to helping people stop smoking, it is very sad that habits have become political issues to use the civil government to coerce the disfavored group into subjection. It is tyranny by political force, the very thing our ancestors came to this continent to escape. This type of taxation is another form of political slavery.
However, many smokers sincerely desire to quit smoking, political manipulation aside, and find themselves bound by a different slavery, which is to tobacco.
