FDA Slow on Enforcing Tobacco Regulation

RICHMOND, Va. — A year after a new law put tobacco regulation in the hands of the Food and Drug Administration, one thing is clear: It will likely be years before any of the most aggressive steps to reduce deaths from smoking might happen.

When President Barack Obama signed the bill into law last June, anti-tobacco advocates suggested it could lead to a reduction in nicotine levels, a ban on menthol cigarettes or other aggressive moves.

Such moves are still a long way down the road as the FDA takes its time assessing the scientific evidence for what would best improve public health. That leaves the future of the industry and effects on both companies and consumers under a cloud of smoke

What is the laser treatment to stop smoking?

My friend told me her dad just got a laser treatment to stop smoking, and he hasn’t picked up a cigarette since the day he got it. My mom is very adamant about quitting and I think this is a really good option if it works. Shes tried all the gums, pills and patches and nothing has worked. Can anyone help me out and tell me more about it, and how effictive it is?

Colleges and Universities Ban Smoking

In less than one month, students at the University of Florida who smoke or use other tobacco products will have to find a way to go without them — at least while they’re on campus.

UF is implementing a tobacco-free policy on July 1, and it’s part of a nationwide trend . In 2005, there were just 18 smoke-free colleges — now there are 394, according to the American Nonsmokers’ Rights Foundation. That number is continuing to grow. Other colleges that will implement a tobacco-free policy this July include the University of Central Oklahoma , Northwestern Michigan College and Widener University in Pennsylvania . Starting this August, all public universities inArkansas will become smoke-free. Violators could be fined anywhere from $100 to $500.

How can i stop my dad from smoking?

He’s reaching the half century mark in about 2 years and I’m really starting to get worried for him. I understand how hard it is for him to quit smoking but I want to say something to him that will make him stop. I am his 16 year old son, and he should care about my life and his life. My friend stopped his father from smoking by saying to his father that if he doesn’t stop smoking, that he’ll start. I can’t say that to my dad because he knows my friend said that to his dad. Any suggestions?
