Texas lawmakers need to pass statewide smoking ban

Seven-time Tour de France champion Lance Armstrong last week put a famous face on the legislative battle to ban smoking statewide in public indoor places, including restaurants and bars.

At a rally outside the Capitol, Armstrong invoked his own successful battle with testicular cancer in backing bills by state Rep. Myra Crownover, R-Denton, and Sen. Rodney Ellis, D-Houston. Armstrong was a visible supporter of the successful 2007 effort to issue billions in bonds to pay for cancer research. His foundation is helping fund a radio advertising campaign in support of the bill.

This will be another vicious legislative fight despite a statewide poll released by Smoke-Free Texas showing 68 percent of Texans favor the ban.
