Glass Fibers in Cigarettes Worsen Lung Disease

(NaturalNews) Shocking new research reveals that a specific type of lung cancer many smokers develop comes fromtiny tears in their lung tissuecaused by microscopic glass fibers, also known as glass wool, found in many conventional cigarette filters. A physician’s assistant (PA) and an intensive care nurse at a major hospital reviewed the damaged lung tissue of several cigarette smokers and said the x-rayslooked identical to those of patients exposed to asbestos, and that diagnostic imaging revealed what looked like “ground glass” which settled in the soft tissue near the bottom of the lungs (GGO – ground glass opacity). The interviewed nurse said, “When lung tissue is damaged over and over,it develops lesions, and the cancer plants itself in there like seeds.” (http://www.appliedradiology.com)

According to the PA, the tiny shards penetrate the “lipid bilayer, then embed in the lung tissue, causing the tissue to harden and eventually lose its ability to absorb oxygen.” This damage fuels the development of the same type of lung cancer (mesothelioma) associated with asbestos poisoning. He also explained how smoking destroys the cilia (tiny hairs) that help push excretions/mucus out, and how when smokers sleep, their breathing patterns relax and the “tar deposits creep in on damaged air sacs called blebs, eventually rupturing and collapsing them.” This is why when smokers awake in the morning they canexperience unproductive coughing fitsand/or bronchial spasms.

Graphic Tobacco Ads to be Heard in Appeals Court

(Reuters) – The government on Tuesday defended graphic tobacco labels and advertising that use pictures of rotting teeth and diseased lungs as accurate and necessary to warn consumers about the risks of smoking.

The Food and Drug Administration on Tuesday asked an appeals court to undo a lower court ruling that said such labels were unconstitutional, violating tobacco companies’ free-speech rights.

Mark Stern, a lawyer from the Justice Department representing the FDA, said the labels showing, for example, a man smoking through a hole in his throat were necessary to show the true risks of smoking, including addiction.

“Adolescents notoriously underestimate their ability to resist addiction,” he told the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit.

“Do (these labels) accurately and realistically depict the message that this is really addictive? Yes, (they) do.”

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates some 45 million U.S. adults smoke cigarettes, which are the leading cause of preventable deaths in the United States.

USF Limits Smokers

TAMPA –

New limits on smoking are definitely clearing the air at the University of South Florida.

But some students who smoke say the new policy has created an “us vs. them” mentality, especially with nonsmokers who push smokers toward designated spots with the tact of a drill sergeant.

“It would be nice to not feel completely shunned,” said Frankie Steele, an art history major, who now walks to the side of the university library to light up.

A month ago, students, staff and visitors on the sprawling Tampa campus could smoke most anywhere outside, with the exception of USF Health facilities. Now, smoking is limited to 24 spots, from a row of benches along the library’s eastern wall to a concrete slab under an oak canopy near the College of Business.

City Moves to Ban Smoking in Apartment Complexes

ELK GROVE (CBS13) – You’ve heard the saying smoke ‘em if you got ‘em. But if you got ‘em and you live in an apartment complex in Elk Grove, the luxury of lighting up may soon go up in smoke.

“i think it’s a pretty good idea,” one apartment resident said.

He’s talking about the possibility of banning smoking in all apartment complexes in the city.

A Sacramento-based trade association that works with landlords is against the idea, however.

“We don’t think it’s necessary,” said Cory Koehler with the Rental Housing Association. We support an owner’s right to choose the policy that’s in the best interest of their particular property. But what we don’t support is a new law by local government forcing the owner to do that.”

That’s because hundreds of apartment complexes in Elk Grove are already smoke-free. Property owners – many argue – have made the move without government intervention.

CDC Wants States to Boost Cigarette Taxes

Hiking up cigarette prices is one of the most effective ways to reduce smoking, especially in youths and young adults. Yet a recent report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) finds that fewer states are increasing their cigarette excise taxes than in the past.

In 2009, 15 states increased their cigarette excise taxes, but in 2010 and 2011, only eight states increased their taxes, while one state — New Hampshire — decreased it. The CDC reports that increasing cigarette excise taxes reduces cigarette demand overall and helps keeps teens from starting to smoke in the first place. A recent report by the surgeon general found that 1 in 5 U.S. teens is still smoking — the teen smoking rate is falling, but the decline has slowed in recent years — which is why the drop in statewide cigarette excise taxes is so concerning.

“The report reinforces the fact that states are increasing their taxes, but the rate has been declining from year to year. There was a high increase in 2009, but that is dropping,” says Dr. Tim McAfee, director of the CDC’s Office on Smoking and Health.

FDA Requires Tobacco Manufacturers to Report Chemicals Added to Cigarettes

WASHINGTON — Tobacco companies will be required to report the levels of dangerous chemicals found in cigarettes, chew and other products under the latest rules designed to tighten regulation of the tobacco industry.

The preliminary guidance issued Friday by the Food and Drug Administration marks the first time tobacco makers will be required to report quantities of 20 chemicals associated with cancer, lung disease and other health problems. The FDA will require companies to display the information in a consumer-friendly format by next April.

Constituents or byproducts of tobacco products that are subject to the new rule include ammonia, carbon monoxide and formaldehyde.

Court Upholds Graphic Cigarette Warnings

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A federal law requiring cigarette packages to carry graphic warnings about the dangers of smoking and restricts how tobacco products may be marketed and advertised passes constitutional muster, a federal appeals court ruled Monday.

The case is one of two by tobacco companies against the federal rules that would make them slap large images on cigarette packs depicting the health ravages of smoking. The other case has so far resulted in a federal judge in Washington blocking the new requirement, arguing last month it violated free speech. That decision is being appealed by the government.

In this case, originally filed in Kentucky, a three-judge panel from the U.S. 6th Circuit in Cincinnati ruled that the government has an interest in preventing consumers from being deceived by the marketing practices of tobacco companies and the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act’s requirements are aimed at that goal.

(Reuters) – U.S. health officials launched a $54 million advertising campaign on Thursday depicting the health risks of smoking in gruesome detail, offering the latest salvo in the government’s campaign to deglamorize cigarette smoking.

The 12-week advertising blitz, called “Tips From Former Smokers,” is an effort to counteract the estimated $10.5 billion a year spent by tobacco companies to market and promote cigarettes in the United States.

“This is really a David versus Goliath fight. The tobacco industry has spent more than $100 billion on marketing and promotion. They continue to spend more than $10 billion a year. That’s a million dollars every hour,” Dr. Thomas Frieden, director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said in a telephone interview.

Some 8 million Americans have smoking-related illnesses, and as many as 443,000 Americans die each year from smoking-related causes. And while U.S. health officials have succeeded in getting many smokers to quit, recent evidence suggests the message is not getting through to America’s youth.

According to the U.S. surgeon general’s report on youth smoking released last week, one in four high school seniors is a regular cigarette smoker, and because few high school smokers are able to quit, some 80 percent will continue to smoke as adults.

One in Four Smoking Teens According to the Surgeon General

(Springfield, MO) – A new report from the Surgeon General finds nearly one in four high school seniors smoke, despite warnings about tobacco.

It’s the first time the surgeon general has looked at youth smoking since 1994.

The report says more than 40 percent of students have tried smoking and the surgeon general is calling it a, “pediatric epidemic in need of a greater public action.”

The students we talked to today say they began at a young age and can’t seem to quit.

Judge blocks FDA rule requiring graphic images on cigarette packs

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — A judge on Wednesday blocked a federal requirement that would have begun forcing U.S. tobacco companies to put large graphic images on their cigarette packages later this year to show the dangers of smoking and encouraging smokers to quit lighting up.

U.S. District Judge Richard Leon in Washington ruled that the federal mandate to put the images, which include a sewn-up corpse of a smoker and a picture of diseased lungs, on cigarette packs violates the free speech amendment to the Constitution.

He had temporarily blocked the requirement in November, saying it was likely cigarette makers will succeed in a lawsuit, which could take years to resolve. That decision already is being appealed by the government.
